Grace HolleranArriving at Emory in the Fall of 2025Visiting Assistant Professor of Portuguese
Grace E. Holleran holds a PhD in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies and Theory from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth (2025) and specializes in literary translation and queer/gender studies in the Portuguese-speaking world. A classically trained trumpet player with a Bachelor of Science in Music from Temple University, Dr. Holleran is also interested in the intersections of musicality and cultural production.
Dr. Holleran's doctoral dissertation, "'Lés instruída é mais divertida!' Translation, Community, and Lesbian Representation in the Portuguese Alternative Press," was awarded a FLAD Portuguese Archives Grant (2023/24) and a UMass Dartmouth Outstanding Research by a Graduate Student Award (2024). The dissertation, substantiated by on-site archival research in Lisbon, analyzes translation methods used by Portuguese lesbian activists, proposes a lesbian translation practice rooted in intimacy and political urgency, and suggests alternate readings of lesbian visibility in Portugal.
Dr. Holleran is a Portuguese–English literary translator and is a member of the editorial collective of Barricade: A Journal of Antifascism & Translation. Upcoming projects include translations of the Angolan author João Melo and the Brazilian poet Catarina Lins.
Prior to the appointment at Emory University, Dr. Holleran taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, gave classes as a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and served as editorial assistant for Tagus Press at the Center of Portuguese Studies and Culture.
