University of Salamanca commemorates 32 years of collaboration with Emory
This past summer, Spain's oldest university inaugurated a plaque in its historic crypt at the Colegio de San Bartolomé to honor 32 years of collaboration with Emory. The event was attended by USAL's Vice-Rector for Internationalization Raúl Sánchez Prieto, Emory in Salamanca semester program director Carmen Torres, other members of USAL's Cursos Internacionales division, and by Emory Department of Spanish and Portuguese professors José Luis Boigues, Elva González, Donald Tuten.
The Emory in Salamanca program allows Emory undergrads to take courses at the University of Salamanca every semester. Profs. Boigues and González direct the Emory Iberian Studies Program, open to Spanish students of all levels, which includes four weeks in Salamanca as well as two weeks in Seville. Applications for the summer 2026 program open on Dec. 15th.

Department Chair Alejandro Herrero-Olaizola publishes new book
Alejandro Herrero-Olaizola, Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Paul & Phyllis Fireman Professor of Spanish, published his latest book, La condición colombiana: violencia y consumo cultural global this past April through the Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá (Colombia). Season of the Swamp, a new novel by Mexican author Yuri Herrera translated by our very own Prof. Lisa Dillman, was released last week. The novel about Mexican hero Benito Juárez's time in New Orleans is a finalist for the 2024 Cercado Prize. Congratulations, Profe Dillman!

Health care and gender studies in Argentina
Emory students spend most of their time during the academic year in Georgia, but this summer, many of them explored different corners of the world. Spanish professor Lisa Dillman again named National Book Award finalist for translated novel
Lisa Dillman, a professor of practice in Emory College’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese, has again been named a National Book Award (NBA) finalist for her literary translation of a novel by Colombian author Pilar Quintana.

Conference at Emory marks nearly a quarter century of supporting the college dreams of Latinx youth
Participants in the 24th-annual Latino Youth Leadership Conference (LYLC) enjoyed a high-energy day of being warmly welcomed to Emory’s Atlanta campus and provided with extensive resources to aid them and their parents in their college searches. A result of the longstanding partnership between Emory and the Latin American Association (LAA), this year’s conference centered on the theme “Together we create the future.”
