Lisa Dillman studied Spanish at the UCSD before completing an M.A. in Spanish Literature at Emory and a second M.A. in Literary Translation from Middlesex University in London. Professor Dillman is a renowned literary translator of Spanish and Latin American literature and has translated over thirty novels. She is a recipient of the Emory Language Center’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and has twice received the Winship Award for Senior Lecturers, and has created several courses on translation at Emory. In the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, she teaches multiple translation seminars (both beginning and advanced), as well as courses on contemporary literature and language. 

 

Some of her translations include Signs Preceding the End of the World, The Transmigration of Bodies, Kingdom Cons, A Silent Fury, Ten Planets and Season of the Swamp by Yuri Herrera (Mexico), The Bitch and Abyss by Pilar Quintana (Colombia), Touch System by Alejandra Costamagna (Chile), Me, Who Dove into the Heart of the World by Sabina Berman (Mexico), Such Small Hands, Rain Over Madrid, A Luminous Republic, August, October and The Right Intentionby Andrés Barba (Spain), and many others. Professor Dillman has twice been a National Book Award Finalist (for her translations of The Bitch and Abyss) and her work has been recognized by numerous other awards, including winning the Best Translated Book Award and Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize, and being shortlisted for the Dublin Literary Award. In 2025 she received the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute Translation Prize for her translation of Season of the Swamp, by Yuri Herrera.
