BIENVENIDOS/ BIENVENIDAS/ BIENVENIDES I WELCOME I BEM-VINDOS / BEM-VINDAS/ BEM-VINDES

We study and teach the languages, literature, and cultures of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds, including Iberia, Latin America, Africa, the US, and Hispanic and Lusophone diasporas worldwide. Our goal is to engage students, scholars, and community members in the interdisciplinary exploration of these regions and diasporas.

We offer programs of study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Across all levels, we emphasize developing students’ understanding of past and present Hispanic and Lusophone texts—from literary works to film and media to everyday discourse—and the social and cultural contexts that shape and are shaped by these texts.

The Department also houses the program in Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies (LALCS),  participates in the Latinx Initiative, and offers the language immersion house, Casa Émory, for undergraduates seeking to live and speak in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
