Statement of Solidarity
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Emory University is outraged and heartsick at the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the many other Black lives taken as a result of structural racism in all its forms. We stand with those who are protesting state-sanctioned violence, we honor the courage of those standing up against white supremacy and we recognize the necessity of listening to what Dr. King called the “language of the unheard.”
As thinkers, scholars, educators, and students, it is our duty to respond. We pledge to educate ourselves more about white privilege, the injustices that centuries of white oppression have wrought, and the pervasiveness of prejudice and discrimination. We pledge to lift every voice of those oppressed both in our teaching and in our scholarship. We pledge to foster learning spaces that practice anti-racism and full participation. And we pledge to hold ourselves accountable to these promises.
