Congratulations to Four Fulbright Award Recipients

Elba García

Elba Garcia is a fourth-year Biology student planning to graduate in Summer 2022. She transferred to Emory in Fall 2020 as a third from Miami Dade College in Miami, FL, and began exploring Portuguese in her first semester. She was welcomed into the community by her professors and peers from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese with the weekly bate-papos and engaging courses. Her experiences with the Emory Portuguese community provided the confidence to strengthen her mastery of the language and explore the Public Health field in the Lusophone world. She was recently awarded the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant in Portugal for the 2022-2023 academic year and will pursue it after her time at Emory.

Wilner Alvarez

Wilner is graduating in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics & Political Science and Spanish & Portuguese. During his time at Emory, he has worked closely with other student leaders to create safe spaces for other Latinx and first-generation students. He is the founder and president of the Latinx Pre-Law Society, an organization focused on providing community and resources to aspiring attorneys. In the coming years, Wilner plans to apply to law school and pursue a career in immigration law. After graduation, Wilner will work and live in Guatemala as an English Teaching Assistant with the Fulbright program.

Raquel Luna

Raquel is a senior double majoring in Spanish & Portuguese and Spanish & Linguistics. The highlights of her academic experience at Emory and Oxford have without a doubt been her language and linguistics courses, where she was able to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for other cultures as well as her own Puerto Rican heritage through studying language. She would like to extend her sincerest gratitude to all the professors and peers who made her time at Emory so memorable (especially in her Portuguese classes 😊)! After graduation, Raquel will work and live in Brazil as an English Teaching Assistant with the Fulbright program, starting in March 2023.

Emma Giarroco

Emma Giarracco is a fourth-year Chemistry student planning to graduate in May 2022. She received a Fulbright Student Research grant.
